STEM-trained workforce enjoys a competitive edge when it comes to career prospects globally. Companies increasingly find themselves competing for best STEM talent for hard-to-fill jobs as STEM talent pool is limited. Growing number of initiatives are bringing to light the shrinking STEM talent pool and the urgent need to encourage more professionals to pursue STEM education and careers to respond to the growing need of developing and acquiring STEM talent.
Expected Learning Outcomes:
Acquire information on the growing STEM fields and the career paths available within these fields. Find answers to questions such as, why are STEM-trained professionals a scarce talent pool. Why is STEM talent shrinking and what can be done to reverse this trend? How can companies effectively build and increase talent pipeline for STEM professionals?

Downtown Portland’s Elliott Center got a whole lot of good vibes at Meyer Trust’s Resource Fair at the Communicating for Good event. The gathering attracted an amalgamation of impressive non-profits from Portland, Salem, and Eugene –all built from different missions and structures, but all increasingly interested in social media, PR, marketing, video broadcasting, and more.
24Notion’s philanthropic endeavors have caught the eye of the Meyer Trust Foundation, as 24Notion was invited to compile a table presentation about what we do and how our services can help the 100+ non-profit representatives that showed up for the event. We presented next to notable companies like Pagatim and TechSoup in a beautiful outdoor courtyard (taking a few indoor breaks to escape the heat, of course!). With company cards, a business card raffle for free consultation services, and 24Notion stickers our booth got visits from almost every attendee!
The event included two, hour-long presentations from Amy Sample Ward of Non-Profit Technology Network on Strategic Communication and Social Media and Laura Mansfield of Pagatim on Brave Authentic Storytelling. Below are the some take-aways from the presentation:
- Social Media is not about the amount of “likes” or “tweets” you get. Instead, it depends on what your goal is as a company. Maybe it is not the amount of “likes” but reaching out to a certain group.
- Stay organized – write down goals, strategies, and social mediums at least every week.
- 1 in 4 people will download a podcast every week, showing we cannot overlook the power of audio sharing.
- While your brain shuts off from visual stimulation from video production, in contrast your brain is stimulated from audio production
All in all, the event had great food, fantastic people and was a great chance us to show off what we have been working hard on here at 24Notion! Check back soon for the results of our hour-long consultation give-away from the event and coverage from OSCON at the Oregon Convention Center.

It was a busy week of panels, tweets, and excitement for 24Notion and CEO Ivo Lukas last week. From the east coast to the west coast, 24Notion was making their presence known in the Sizzling Miami Tweet up in the beautiful Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Miami and the Girls in Tech Career Expo in the foggy city of San Francisco.
In Miami, 24Notion started the week off right as a sponsor of the hottest celebration of social gathering and social media. And it was not only Miami residents that joined in the fun – the #SizzlingMiamiTweetUp went virtual with tweets, statuses, and posts from all over the nation. Check out the conversation here. Keep your eyes open for some of the influential leaders that flocked to the sunny city to support the night of tweet up:
As if that was not enough, 24notion’s trusted leader, Ivo Lukas, took a quick jump across our grand nation and ended up in San Francisco, as a feature for the Girls in Tech Panel Discussion on Landing the Perfect Job – and Keeping it. The panel discussion included females who have longed proved that they know what they are doing in the career world. Lukas and Girls in Tech were joined with leaders in Microsoft, Facebook and Anita Borg Institute.
The event hosted 350 eager attendees who gained ‘how tos’ on writing a resume, social networking, and maneuvering in the technology field sector. The event also touched based on some common interview mishaps and inspired women of all ages that their qualities and skills can land them the perfect job with a few helpful tips.
Lukas was honored to be a part of such a crucial and influential panel discussion – proud that Girls in Tech are taking the steps needed to begin to close the gender gap that reigns in STEM careers.
In the end, 24Notion’s bicoastal adventures were a huge success — receiving lots of love from both coasts. Check back soon to see what is thrown our way next. One thing is for sure — it does not look like we are slowing down!
We hope you all had a happy and sunny fourth with lots of food, family, and fun.

To say the senior students of the Art Institute of Portland can work it out is an understatement. At last weekend’s fashion show, the designs were fierce and the audience was impressed. The students played it cool by showing no signs of the blood, sweat, and tears that were put into the weeks of perfecting their interior designs, apparel designs, apparel accessories, and even fashion marketing skills – all that was visible to the audience was effortless creativity.
Not only was this a big night for the students of the Art Institute, but also for 24Notion, as CEO and founder Ivo Lukas revealed this years winner of a $10,000 scholarship. 24Notion is proud to give back and has even been ranked as Portland Business Journal’s 23rd most philanthropic company. The anticipation was heavy and the competition was stiff but right as the show started Ivo announced Amelia (Amy) Fuertes as this year’s new scholarship recipient. At the show, Fuertes’ face showed it all, as she barely was able to whisper out a “gracias” from all the excitement!
When asked why she chose Fuertes, Lukas responded, “She did it all – she does everything by herself, which is incredibly admirable. To be control of the whole process, from the idea to execution, takes endurance and dedication.”
The fashion show and silent auction was a five-hour affair and so Nature’s Tears, in cahoots with 24Notion, provided all the agitated eyes and skin a burst of hydration with their complimentary goody bags for the models, designers, VIPs and first 100 attendees!Needless to say, the goodies were snatched up quick, as a sigh of relief spread throughout the event’s location, Pure Space in the Pearl District.
Overall, the fashion show was a fabulous event filled with fashion enthusiasts, incredible students, and even old friends. 24Notion invited VIP guests and clients/partners, ranging from the eco sustainable technology of Columbia green to apparel and footwear of Adidas – all came out to support 24Notion and AI fashion show. Did we not also mention that the students made 24Notion our own cutting-edge, one of a kind paper dress? Check it below!

Social Media Chat 101: Who’s who in Social Media- series 1
Profile Star: Ann Tran
I joined Twitter in March 2009, though for the first six months I remained relatively inactive. I mainly observed my feed and if I spotted something I liked, I shared it.
I remember feeling so unnerved when I first began tweeting my own original thoughts or content. I think I was just “trying to figure it out,” like everyone when they jump into a new platform.
Now, I’m on several social networks am constantly working toward being active on each of my accounts.
That said, my preferred network is still Twitter.
I remember how geeky I was when I received my first re-tweet: “Oh wow, I finally got re-tweeted, and it went far!” ツ
Two years later, I saw a tweet pop up in my own mentions that said something like, “Eeeekkk @AnnTran_ re-tweeted me!”
I thought that was cute that I’d given someone the same fulfillment I once felt.
What is my strategy and how do I maintain my followers? I actually have a post on “How to keep up with over 100,000 Twitter Followers,” in which I feature ten other people addressing this question.
For me, I love to introduce and be supportive of other Tweeters that have “relatively fewer” followers – ones that are primarily personal friends. And often, they’re able to capture and display much more distinctive content in their streams.
I am able to connect with people through my feed as well as in real life by regularly attending tweet-ups and conferences through travel in the U.S. and internationally.
I share my travel and relationship discoveries in my blog, allowing my readers to connect with their social media friends through my writing.
I always hope to deliver fresh, quality information; people follow someone’s stream for unique messages, links and tips that will provide entertainment, wisdom, or perhaps even inspiration, so that’s what I hope to provide.
Think of yourself watching television; what channels do you normally tune into and why? I like to be entertained while I am learning. So, I enjoy a positive stream, one that makes me laugh or stimulates my thought process.
Frequent re-tweeting or sharing friends’ content shows you are promoting others and giving back. When we take the time to promote our social media friends, it makes a comfortable environment where they’re happy to return the favor if/when needed.
That said, it’s still a good idea to provide your own findings and share them with your followers. Balance is essential!
My social media “secret” is more so advice; to simply enjoy each moment, have fun with friends, and share!
It’s an amazing world out there, and to be able to meet all these incredible individuals across the globe, with just the click of a mouse, is an incredible thing.
This year, I look forward to making new real-life friends, like @MsSonicFlare. Thank you Ivo for the opportunity to be a guest on your blog!

Last week wrapped up the http://gracehopper.org/2011/ in Portland Oregon. 3000 attendees (over 140 companies, 235 academics representations and I would say 90% all women) from all over the world flocked to attend this 4 days conference. What if, is the topic of the conference – It is about creating the next generation to be the leader in STEM/Tech (science, technology engineering and mathematics). Telle Whitney opened the conference by introducing a new initiative by Anita Borg/Grace Hooper “TechWomen” change agent scholars: 6 women mentees (Algeria, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine and Egypt) selected as up-and-coming leaders who will advance in women’s participation in technology and help support more women in their hometown and expand STEM education. TechWomen pairs technical women in the greater San Francisco Bay Area with their counterparts in the Middle East and North Africa for a professional mentorship and exchange program at leading technology companies.
Keynote speaker, Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook gave a career advice for any young woman who wants to move up the ladder in the career of technology:
The conference sessions range from career, academic, technical, theme and industry track. With Saturday dedicated for an open source day: Codeathon for humanity.
Grace Hopper Aspirations computing awards by NCWIT took place on Thursday night. More than 1200 applicants applied for and top 30 young women were chosen to attend this conference. The Aspirations award is the catalyst that propels young women into studying computer science in college and ultimately pursuing a career in computing and information technology. Event sponsored by Microsoft, Intel, viawest, Lewis and Clark, puppetlabs and 24Notion (shout out to Ruthe F who did an amazing job on the award celeb; did you know that they’ve granted over 800 girls up to date on the scholarship?)
Career fair and exhibitors from Google, yahoo, Microsoft, NSA, Deutsch bank, Lockheed martin, Amex, Intel, Pixar, Facebook, Twitter and hundred others flocked to recruit the brightest STEM young individual to lead their company. (Did you know that STEM jobs paid 20% more than regular career?).
Leaving the conference energized and excited that at Girls in Tech Mentorship Program, we are here to support and developed the next generation to raise them up the top. so, what are you waiting for? Get into it!
