StartUp PDX challenge: 24Notion supports entrepreneurship community

The Portland Development Commission (PDC) opened applications Tuesday May 20 for the 2014 Startup PDX Challenge, an annual competition designed to connect startups to the growing entrepreneurial ecosystem in Portland, Oregon and assist the businesses for one year through their early stage growth. PDC is seeking diverse founding teams of for-profit startups with an ambition to scale to a national or international market. Six winners will receive a prize package valued at $50,000 which includes a $15,000 cash grant (no equity taken), free rent for one year, and free services and memberships.  Applications close June 23 and the six winners will start the program October 1, 2014.

Challenge winners will receive a package valued at $50,000 per company:

  • $15,000 working capital grant (no equity taken)
  • Free rent for one year
  • Free legal services
  • Free marketing and PR services
  • Free hiring and HR services
  • Free memberships and access to eight different organizations and programs that focus on entrepreneurs

Challenge merit finalists will receive a package valued at $4,000 per company:

  • Discounted rate at Forge Portland coworking space
  • Free memberships and access to seven different organizations and programs that focus on entrepreneurs

Mentorship Makes a Difference for Everyone

On March 8, 2013 is the International Women’s day, 24Notion’s own CEO Ivo Lukas hosted a virtual summit by Global Tech Women with Dawn Armstrong, the Mentorship Director of Girls in Tech in Los Angeles.  The topic was about the huge need for mentorship of the upcoming generations of girls in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).  Since these industries are largely comprised of men, it is vital that women with experience in these fields help other women with technical skills and how to be successful.  This is a great opportunity to promote greater equality in STEM fields, and also a huge advantage for both the mentees as well as mentors.

At 24Notion, we love media and technology, and what’s great about the rise in technology is the convenience and accessibility that has emerged for mentoring channels.  E-mentoring has already been successfully used in education and has become a prominent practice among businessmen, especially entrepreneurs.  Mentorship is becoming so popular in business that this Forbes post suggests that one should have multiple mentors with different specializations to get a wide range of benefits. Mentorship is on the rise today, and it will only continue to grow.

Ivo and Dawn explain that if you’re mentoring someone (or being mentored by someone), you are “making contacts that are going to serve you and you are going to serve them for years and years to come.”  These relationships are not just for a mentee’s professional development, but for the collaboration that comes out of these connections. 24Notion thrives on connections since we know it’s the way to reach audiences and achieve strategic goals.  Our goals are to make a difference, and mentoring is a perfect way to do it.  This is an opportunity to give back and learn something new at the same time! Building the next generation: Girls in Technology field

A recent article from Inc noted that women in technology still face an uphill battle. Quite true!

Screen shot 2011-09-21 at 2.11.29 PMAccording to the article, “Women make up half of the U.S. workforce but represent only 25 percent of the technology industry. Despite growth in entrepreneurship, women lead only eight percent of technology start-ups.”

Is this a problem of widespread gender stereotypes? Lack of aspiration to the technology sector by young girls? We need to balance the energy of building awareness with keeping more women in tech arenas. 75% of women in technology report “loving their work,” yet women leave technology careers at a staggering rate.

Finding support and guidance is quite a challenging task. Being in this field for some time, I’ve seen many inspired young women/girls have a hard time finding established women and entrepreneurs in tech to help them maneuver within the industry or corporations. We need more families and friends who can embrace and mentor them within the field.

How do we address this issue? My take is that it starts by exposing, educating and engaging girls from an early young age. Many parents continue to say , “Hey, I would love to have my kids become lawyers, doctors, or entrepreneurs” but you hardly ever hear parents encourage their young girls to become a scientist, or explore technical or mathematicians occupations. Especially at a young age, girls are exposed to more traditional games and toys, but why can’t girls play with Legos? Or create a robotic science project at school?

We invite you to make a difference. We have launched the Girls in Tech Mentorship program in summer 2011. There are huge opportunities to build up the next generation of young girls in technology and entrepreneurship. Our goal is not only to inspire, share knowledge and help young girls to take notice of how cool technology can be, but to expose and educate their parents by encouraging their girls to take part in science, math and tech fairs.  We are looking for mentors, mentees, sponsors, media partners and more. Gender Diversity is important in Computing – STEM

On May 23-25, 2011, The National Center for Women & Information Technology(NCWIT) hosted an amazing and successful conference in NYC: Women and IT practices and ideas to revolutionize computing.

#NCWITSUMMIT 2011- comprised of three days of practices, workshops, ideas, research, inspiration, conversations, and innovation. Learn from noted experts and voices in the fields of computing, innovation, and diversity; share perspectives with other practitioners; and celebrate the achievements of girls and women in IT.

Key Facts about the status of Women in Information Technology:

  1. In 2009, starting and median salaries for computing degrees were among the top 10.
  2. In 2007, a woman typically earned $0.78 to every $1.00 a man earned. On the other hand, Census data also suggest that women who work in computing-related occupations are better off, with a median income that is 86% of men’s median earnings.
  3. More than 60% of the 1.5 million students surveyed who reported no high-school computer coursework or experience at all were girls. In spite of these distressing numbers, recent data give some reason for optimism: Girls’ representation among students with programming experience has increased four percentage points since 2005.
  4. Although the percentage of students reporting no computing experience or coursework has increased gradually in the past decade, girls’ representation among students with computer programming experience has also been on the rise.
  5. From 2000 to 2009, women comprised 55% to 58% of the overall professional workforce. Women’s representation in life, physical and social sciences and among physicians and surgeons increased between 2000 and 2009. Meanwhile, the percentage of women in computing related occupations declined between 2000 and 2009, with the exception of 2008 to 2009, when the proportion of women held steady.
  6. Why Women Leave the Workplace: Research shows that five primary barriers often lead women to leave the technical workplace. These barriers to gender diversity are unconscious bias, isolation, supervisory relationships, promotion processes, and competing life responsibilities.
  7. Women Tech Entrepreneurs a Minority, but Successful: In 2009, firms that were majority-owned by women accounted for 40% of all private companies in the U.S.54 Estimates of the percentage of start-ups majority-owned by women hover around 8%.
  8. Female and Male Company Founders Share Similar Characteristics: In a study that used a stratified random sample of technical entrepreneurial firms, wherein 8% of founders were women, findings suggest that men and women founders share many characteristics. These successful entrepreneurs were similar in almost every respect, with only a few statistically significant differences.
  9. Women were more likely than men to express concern about protecting their company’s intellectual capital, to consider their own prior experience important to their success, or to consider encouragement by a co-founder important to their success. Men were more likely than women to feel pressured to be the primary family breadwinner.
  10. Open Source Lacks Gender Diversity: While women’s representation in computing is low in general, it is even lower in open source computing — only 1.5% of all Open Source Software (OSS) developers are women. Research about the participation of women in open source is just beginning, but there is anecdotal evidence that the open source community is less than welcoming to women. This may mean women are missing opportunities to make important professional connections, contribute to new software, and hone their coding skills.

UNITED NATIONS: 55th session of the Commission on the status of Women(CSW)

The fifty-fifth session of the Commission on the Status of Women is taking place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 22 February to 4 March 2011. Representatives from Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all regions of the world will attend the session. There will be a number of activities, including interactive dialogues and panels, during the two-week session. I’m in particular excited about the track panel discussion on science and technology for women and young girls- it is one of the topic that is dearly to my heart. Since i’ll be missing this year attendance, but thanks to the live webcast! so, i’ll be following the story from afar. A group of leaders from all over the world will be in discussion over access and participation of women and girls to education, training, science and technology, including for the promotion of women’s equal access to full employment and decent work.
